Avanti Goes to the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics

Avanti Sports Medicine & Fitness medical consultant, KRISTEN WINGFIELD, MD, goes to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games as one of the team physician for the Canadian Ski Team.

Opening and Closing Ceremonies

The Olympic Winter Games Opening Ceremony will take place at Vancouver's BC Place on February 12, 2010. The Closing Ceremony on February 28, 2010 will also be held at BC Place.

Pro Amateur Beach Soccer Championship

Dr. Sonia Bell of Avanti Sports Medicine & Fitness has been the acting medical director for the Pro Amateur Beach Soccer League for three years.  Beach soccer begun on the beaches of Brazil and has rapidly become a world wide phenomenon. 

California's Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk hosts this annual championship event in June, bringing together over 150 male and female teams ranging from 7 years of age to

the elite players from the national team.   It's a fast pace, exhilarating competitive sport requiring skill and endurance, that has the potential for sustaining injuries as varied as the ages of the participants of the competition.  Avanti's team has been ready each year!!!

2010 South African FIFA World Cup

AVANTI SPORTS MEDICINE & FITNESS' president and owner, SONIA BELL, MD, visits South Africa to attend the FIFA World Cup and to meet with sports medicine physicans from around the world to discuss soccer related sports injury and field medical management.

Alcatraz Triathlon

Avanti Sports Medicine & Fitness provided the medical team for the 2010 San Francisco Triathlon at Alcatraz Island.  The race begins with a treacherous swim through the strong currents of the frigid San Francisco Bay.  It is followed by biking through the sharp turns and agonizing hill climbs of the streets of San Francisco and ends with a with a beach run that test the endurance of the most elite athlete.  This year, 1800 participated in this test of aerobic endurance and mental fortitued.  Avanti Sports Medicine & Fitness' Team provided preventative and onsite medical services, as well as triaged medical emergencies for one of San Francisco's most challenging triathlon events.

Dr. Sonia Bell and the Avanti Sports Medicine & Fitness massage team served as the medical consults and the massage therapist for the Internationally Renowned River Dance Tour Group during the performances in the San Francisco Bay Area, Winter 2009.

Dr. Sonia Bell, president of Avanti Sports Medicine & Fitness, returns to the "LEAP" PROGRAM to teach dancers from the San Francisco Ballet Company and neighboring companies Dance Kinesiology. 

LEAP (Liberal Education for Arts Professionals) is an internationally recognized education program specifically designed for current and former professional dancers.  Founded in 1999, LEAP makes it possible for these working adults to receive a comprehensive liberal arts education and earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Saint Mary's College in 3 to 4 years of part-time study.  Today, with classes offered in San Francisco, Los Angelels and New York/New Jersey, LEAP serves more than 300 current and former professional dancers from leading ballet, modern, and ethnic dance companies as well as musical theater, TV and film.

Avanti Sports Medicine & Fitness' founder , Dr. Sonia Bell, a former student of and performer with the San Francisco Ballet, uses this unique opportunity to educate the dancers on the importance of understanding their individual biomechanics and it's effect on the health of their muscles and joints.  Integrating clinical examples and treatment options in her lectures, Dr. Bell hopes to promote injury prevention and ultimately, longevity for the dancer's professional careers.
